The best Introductory offer credit cards

The credit card with the best introductory offer is the one that features an introductory offer that represents the greatest value to you and is offered in conjunction with a competitive range of credit card features such as interest rates, annual fees, interest free days and reward point earn rates which will be applied to the credit card during and post the introductory offer period.

What  type of credit card introductory offer is the best for you?

When accessing the merits of the vast array of credit card introductory offers available at any one time the initial decision you will be faced with is to establish which type of introductory offer is the best for you, given your financial circumstances and how you plan on using your credit card. Introductory credit card offers broadly fall into 5 types, these are outlined below:

Credit Card Balance Transfer Offer - Balance transfer credit card offers are targeted at consumers who are looking to reduce the cost of the debt they have accumulated on their credit or store cards. Balance transfer offers enable you to transfer all or a portion of your current credit card debt to a new balance transfer credit card which charges interest on this debt at a balance transfer rate, critically this rate will be significantly lower than your current purchase rate and so will save on interest charges. Introductory balance transfer rates as low as 0% p.a. are frequently offered, which apply for periods of between 6 and 24 months. Once this balance transfer period ends the balance transfer interest rate reverts to a higher interest rate that is generally either the credit cards purchase or cash advance rate. Use our Balance Transfer Saving Calculator to estimate the interest saving you could make by transferring your credit card debt to a 0% p.a. balance transfer credit card.

0% p.a. Purchase Rate Introductory Offers - This is a relative new type of introductory offer that is frequently offered in combination with a balance transfer introductory offer. The offer of 0% p.a. on purchases is offered for an introductory period that is generally in the range of 3 to 12 months, during which any purchases made using your credit card will attract no interest. To retain this 0% interest charge on the purchases for the introductory period, you must make the monthly minimum payment each month, failure to do so will see the 0% p.a. introductory rate reverting to the credit cards higher revert rate.

No annual credit card fee for the first year - This introductory offer simply involves a waiving of the annual credit card fee which can equate to savings in the range of $50 up to as much as $250 in the first year. On the 12 month anniversary of holding the credit card the credit card fee (which you saved in the 1st year) will be charged to your account and added to your balance.

Discounted annual credit card fee - Where the annual credit card fee is at the larger end of the range (Commonly in the case of Gold, Platinum and Black cards) the credit card providers offer significant discounts on the annual credit card fee in the first year. This discount is usually in the range of 50% off the usual fee, in some instances this discount maybe subject to making a minimum spend using your card within a defined time period, so for example $5,000 with the 1st 3 months of holding the credit card.

Bonus Frequent Flyer Points - The majority of frequent flyer credit cards include a Bonus Frequent Flyer Point Offer where a number of points are offered as an incentive to apply for the credit card. These points are then awarded to the cardholder, subject to acceptance, and increasingly subject to reaching some minimum spend thresholds with the card, across defined time periods. The bonus points on offer range from 5,000 up to as many as 50,000 points.
